Quintet for Winds, 1st Movement

from Vanguard Recitals by Matthew Neil Andrews

/

about

Composed summer and fall 2000; performed and recorded spring 2001.

This quintet for winds (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon) was the result of an attempt to compose more melodically, using written texts as a sort of scaffolding for instrumental polyphony. Because I was at a religious school, I chose a religious text: the Ordinary of the medieval mass.

Having decided upon a medieval text, I figured I might as well make the whole thing medieval and borrowed a bunch of harmonic and rhythmic ideas from plainchant and the polyphony of Leonin, Perotin, Machaut, and Dufay.
