Composed summer 1999 through spring 2000; performed and recorded in the fall of 2000.

The first movement introduces the work's "dissonant" element, centered around the pitch-class set [0,1,6,7] and the famous "BACH" motif, consisting of Bb (written 'B' in German), A, C, B (written 'H' in German).
