"Pensées" for Brass Quintet

from Vanguard Recitals by Matthew Neil Andrews

/

about

Composed spring and summer 1999, performed in the fall of 2000.

A first attempt at brass writing, exploring arch forms and octatonic counterpoint. I wrote a lot of difficult hockets for this one.

A lovely old Penguin paperback of the writings of the French philosopher/mathematician/gambler Blaise Pascal was my constant companion while I was thinking this piece up; hence the title.
